The World Heavy Oil Conference is coming to Edmonton! Our fair city has been chosen to host the second annual World Heavy Oil Conference, March 915, 2008.
Founded by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the Alberta government, Canadian Alberta Petroleum Centre (CAPC), and DMG World Media, the WHOC is an international technical and business conference focused primarily on the heavy oil industry. The WHOC specifically seeks to address the changing role of the heavy oil industry within the scope of the world’s present energy trends. Energy industry leaders and investors from around the world will come together in an atmosphere of international co-operation to discuss and promote global development and oil technology in the heavy oil sector. Besides allowing Edmonton to showcase its economic advantages, the WHOC reinforces the concept of Alberta’s capital city as a global portal to northern oilsands development.
The WHOC takes place every two years in a different city around the world. For more information, visit the conference website at www.whoc-conference.com.

Alberta’s economy has been on fire and the fire does not seem to be going out any time soon. Within this hot economy, companies great and small are all experiencing a similar challengethe increased shortage of skilled labour.
Skilled workers are hard to find these days for two main reasons. In Alberta, an obvious one is the baby boomer retirement trend. If baby boomers are retiring, especially all at once, this suddenly eliminates a significant portion of the skilled workforce. Replacing them with skilled and experienced workers is going to be an overwhelming, if not impossible, task. Second, technological advances and the trend towards competitiveness on a global scale should be factored into every human resources plan if long-term success is to be achieved. Technical schools are producting graduates as fast as they can, but technology continues to advance even faster in the manufacturing industry, driving the industry towards an innovation-based future with limitless opportunities. The demand for skilled, technology-oriented workers in the manufacturing industry will only increase and if companies are unable to strengthen their human capital assets, they will lose out on potential opportunities, especially in the global arena.
